It's a tailed emperor caterpillar...quite a pretty butterfly with (surprise surprise) blue tails. The caterpillar is cooler I reckon!

Correct, the power was connected to a surge protected board but I think it was the surge flowing through the phone line that killed it. My new PC and everything else survived no worries.
