Looking for suggestions on what to grow over our drain field which takes up most of our back yard. My friend thinks that I can grow bananas over it but wouldn't they be too heavy? I was thinking of just having drought tolerant plants there.

Hiya! I know very little about drain fields, but I believe you do have to be careful with some root types, as to not to damage either drain field or plant. I've hear perennial plants or grasses often work best as their root systems are quite shallow and are less likely to do damage.

Thanks. My buddy said bananas roots spread outward rather than down, but I'm not sure.

I don't know enough about it to really, confidentally give you an answer, so do not take what I say about banana trees in good judgement. I believe they do generally have relatively shallow roots, but it depends on the type of soil as well. In looser soil they're known to dig deeper I believe.
