I was just thinking, assuming they float... they might do well just being left as a floating cork. It should hold it's shape enough to not have the seed fall through. Plus, it may just sit a little better when it's not being compressed shut by the containers you put them in.
I've been tempted on occasion to grow water plants in a storage container of sorts, in/on floating pieces.

actually yes they will float but the slit closes tight anyways i found them to be too tight and restrictive to the stems so experimenting with a few other options of a lighter density neoprene foan and thinner so the stem can displace the material

You could, theoretically, also intentonally take a small piece out of each corner. But that might defeat the point of holding the seed altogether anyway.
