Building my Quail Pen , by Jen

I've missed the updates for this thread and have just seen it.

Sounds like you need to build some more cages Jenni, like maybe another 4? :D .... that way you can have more control over your expanding flock? herd? gaggle? of Quails.

LOL @stevo you have read my mind...

Problem I have is 11 quail is not enough if you want quail for both eggs and eating. So I recon double the stock is required.

I have 20 eggs in the incubator at the moment and if they successfully hatch I will be in drama.. Was thinking I will have to put them in one of our camping tents as emergency accommodation.. My old man looks like he is up for helping me build another pen over the next month. So may be updates on quail pen # 2...

You've had a tough run Jenni but things do go wrong sometimes with all poultry. Quail are a small bird and although they are quite hardy and don't suffer from as many diseases as say chickens do they still have issues from time to time (as you are finding out).

I occasionally find a dead bird in the pen without any signs of problems at all but it's quite normal to lose the odd bird to a heart attack or random injury. Quail are a short lived bird anyway...

In regards to the injuries, the broken beak might be ok depending on how far up towards the head it has snapped. I've seen them manage fine with a broken beak as long as their eating is not hindered. Same with being blind in one eye he should be ok too.

The main thing is your management of the birds and what you are doing by monitoring them and using isolation techniques is exactly the right way to go!

Hi Jenny loved your progression on your quail cage. I am looking to upgrade my current set up from the standard cage to something a little bit more elaborate like yours. I only keep quails for eggs currently only have four looking to maybe have five or six anyway just wanted to say thank you. I loved the design.
