I live in Bundaberg QLD and am having a go at container gardening. I tried to join a few months ago but must have buggered it up somehow, so I’ve tried again and here I am. Haven’t had a lot of success yet because I just jumped in without doing much research but I have learnt my lesson and I’m paying more attention to details. Looking forward to chatting and bouncing ideas off you guys.

G'day Sparky and thanks for joining SSC!

I really like container growing even though I have plenty of space because container plants are easy to control. For example, you can easily manipulate or choose the soil mix, regulate water or sunlight, monitor the amount of fertiliser etc.

Having said that, containers also can be tricky at times such as in hot weather with pots drying out too fast or heating up and depending on the type of crop some plants grow better in containers than others :)

When you say container gardening.. what size were your containers and what where they made of and what did you put in them please..

The biggest reason containers fail is reflected heat into the container and lack of moisture retention.

I always use an adapted form of hugelcuture, which is putting logs or even broken up twigs! ( depending on the size of the container) in the base.. it acts as a sponge. Then follow with straw , then a good potting mix with added moisture crystals., then plant then cover with a good mulch to stop it drying out too much.. lastly I use shade cloth if necessary.

I also use nappies to line hanging baskets.. they hold a good amount of moisture..lol.

I have a container/potted garden as well. I put coconut coir in the potting mix to help stop drying out too much. Hugleculture in containers sounds like a good idea.
