We Go TROLLING Out in the Bay

When I was a little kid my dad took me fishing once on a dingy upon a quiet calm river or lake and I loved every minute of it even though we didn't catch anything. Every time since then that I've been fishing, the only thing I've managed to catch has been at state of sunburn, windburn, cold, wet, hungry, bored, and if on a boat also seasick. I've concluded that fishing is not for me, but recently I've started watching Mark's fishing videos now and then and I'm actually enjoying them and they're making me think maybe fishing wouldn't be so bad if I went fishing with the right people, in the right way, at the right time, in the right place. When I figure out who and when and where that is, I might give it another chance one year.

I've never been on a boat at sea until last year! And only because we booked a tour for champagne beach and to go snorkeling with turtles and fishes in the reefs. It was majestic.

Growing up, we would spend every summer on our parents' boat for at least 3 weeks. It was beautiful. And often we would whip out a fishing rod or our (google kruisnet) cross net. We would catch loads of little fish and crayfish. Especially once I got scared of touching fish out of nowhere (randomly developed a phobia of touching them, unprovoked. I still have it), the net took my preference as you rarely had to touch them. And I used to love fishing with a cast rod - when dad was still willing to take the fish off for me, before he thought I was old enough to do it myself ahah.

I agree @Grandmother Goose , with the right people fishing can be amazing! I think buying a tour and going with friends (who aren't out JUST to get a catch, and too competetive) can be amazing. Definitely worth a shot! And maybe your son might like it too.
Thankfully there's good medication out there against seasickness, and if you go out prepared (hats, sunscreen, spf clothing) there really shouldn't be much of an issue. Even if you don't catch anything, you might still have a great bonding time ;)

Friends? What is this thing you speak of? I think part of the problem with other people I've gone fishing with is that fishing wasn't their main goal, drinking was, or there was just too much clash of personality in the group for it to be truly friendly. I'm disinclined to go with people that don't know what they're doing, I know fishing can required permits and there's regulations, size limits, it all changes from one fishing spot to the next, and I don't know one fish from another, which makes it a bit intimidating for me as I've become accustomed to being the responsible adult in charge, going into a situation where I have no clue what I'm doing is a bit much for me. But a fishing charter sounds fantastic, I watched Mark's video about fishing charters and that's what I want to do. It would require a 500+km journey to get to the nearest one, which means I'd have to make it a big family holiday rather than a day trip, but something to think about for the future if I can convince some family and friends to go with me one year.

Aah yeah nah. We have a rule at the house "no alcohol for alcoholics, and no getting drunk for anyone". Simple as. Don't like it? There's the door. Everyone knows and agrees. I suppose on a boat it isn't quite as easy, but you can put it as "I'm only coming if y'all sober, otherwise have fun without me".

If you book a tour usually they help you sort this out, or it's something they have already sorted for you. It'd be a big drive, but maybe if yous are going for a holiday anyway, you could plan it ahead.
