Mark has grown another batch of potatoes, this time he dug them in, rather than surface laying.
He prepared the bed by pouring more soil and compost in the bed, as it had sank in quite a bit. This was because the bed was filled with banana waste, and during the natural composting this can decrease in volume quite a bit. He didn't anticipate, however, that banana plants would start growing between them.
Mark used potatoes from last years' crops that he stored cool and dry place for about 5 months, so that he could plant them in the right time of year, as the Summer gets too hot in his sub-tropical climate. He watered the beds about twice weekly, and even went on a big holiday overseas during which the leaves died from either lack of water or natural age. Mark even showed us how nutgrass has grown into a potato and used it as fertiliser itself.
One half of the bed has done better than the other half. Mark reckons this was because the banana trees might have partially shaded part of the garden bed during Winter, so the potato leaves might not have had as much sunlight.
Mark ended digging up 26kg (or 57lbs) of potatoes
