I've found that cherry tomatoes just refuse to die and will creep and crawl and grow anywhere. I've had a cherry tomato plant that I decided I didn't like the taste of, so I cut it out of my pot and removed said pot so I could grow something else in it.... the vine grew new roots from where it laid on the ground! I've tried to actively kill it for weeks until I gave up and left the plant to the birds. It lasted well over a year before the whipper snipper finally put an end to it successfully.
This mound growing definitely works a charm for those that love it, though I personally recommend thick skinned or hardy tomatoes. I've had many successes with cherry types, but my Roma tomatoes really didn't appreciate it and got overwhelmed with pests eating them.
