I'm currently growing ginger for my first-time ever, but it seems to grow very similarly to my Turmeric. Near identical, really. Though the foilage does look significantly different and are unmistakenable.

I find that I need well-draining soil as the rhizomes tend to rot quite easily if kept wet too long. I can mostly neglect them, with an occasional watering. From what I hear both plants do like their fertiliser, so don't be afraid to add a little fertiliser during it's growing periods.
I harvest my turmeric when all the leaves die off, so I'm intending to do the same with ginger, and see what results I get.

Added fun; I bought this ginger from Woolworths. I picked a rhizome with lots of nodes (to my knowledge it'll grow leaves and roots from such locations), and after a week or two I started seeing leaves poke through the soil.
To my knowledge both ginger and turmeric prefer warmer climates, so those in colder climates might need to grown them during certain seasons, or in a greenhouse.
