It's a new year, and with this new year hopefully a lot more people interested in gardening. But in saying that... what do you think is content most needed?

Yeah, the forum has gotten a little quieter over the past couple weeks, maybe even months. It was a bit busier when Mark livestreamed and advertised it in his videos. I'll touch base with him in a little while to see how he's going with that. I know he's been really busy lately.

Maybe an edible species list that can be continuously added to, with a photo to help people identify new foods and what they look like. To go a step further maybe a rating system that people can vote on how difficult it was to grow and possibly a rating for productivity along with a place for comments for further information.

More of a list of species that can be grown, something a little like this is a good example https://tuckerbush.com.au/plants/fruiting-plants/ though this is only Australian plants. If on top of that they had a rating for how easy they are to grow and productive. Then when clicked on you could access comments about them to see peoples experiences. The aim would be to let people discover what they could grow and learn with others about it. Self sufficiency's greatest limitation is the species we know about and have access to. Obviously almost everyone knows about something like tomatoes but something like a cape gooseberry is relatively unknown yet easier to grow and in many cases more productive. If cape gooseberries had a 5 star rating for productivity and easy of growing and people could at a glance see that information and along with other species it would go a long way to improving the food security of those wishing to grow their own.

Very much the downside of my series, being focused on food for the intrepid forager. I only occasionally discuss home growing, although I do collect seeds of interesting edibles. I have minimal room to grow anything at home anyway.

I've been in recent contact with one of the guys over at aussiegeenthumb.com.au (no affiliation) and their website has much of that stuff already, albeit slanted for the Australian climate, soils, growing zones, etc.

I don't think I personally have quite got the appropriate knowledge to set anything like that up if I'm honest @SamfromWA . But I do like the idea and it may be something for the future. Of course, you're also more than welcome to start this up yourself so other members can look at this.
I'm also biased towards Australia as that is where I live, and have limited knowledge on The Netherlands as that was my previous residence.

I certainly like what you're doing JP and its very well put together for its purpose, no need to change i think its good. More or less i was just thinking about something different that would propel more people in the right direction with foods they can grow. Looking at the aussiegreenthumb website and its not really something people can get oriented in, its probably more a guide for when people have a specific thing in mind and looking for more information. I just thought a community forum listing food plants in a nice easy to see in a glance visual format with ratings would give help in finding new things and deciding what to try growing. Not information heavy, just a simple initially visual guide and then clicking on to see from people who tried to grow it in the comments. Though i'm sure it wouldn't be particularly easy to set up. You could let entries be added by the community and there more people got involved from different backgrounds the more the knowledge of edible species would circulate.

Haha unfortunately i barely have enough time for all the things i need to do to keep myself fed but i think something that could be created and continuously added to by the community would be quite helpful in the pursuit of self sufficiency.

I mean, if people are willing to chip in, we could put it as a sub-genre under the Tips & Tricks guide to container gardening. It's already a "living" thread as I try to add/edit as often as I can. Progress is slow but steady, but bear in mind I'm learning still too. I'm a relatively new gardener, probably having around 2 years under the belt by now. And I do try to fact-check what I upload, which takes a surprising amount of time. Of course, not everything is perfect still.

How would you suggest it would be set up @SamfromWA ? Would you class them per biome, growing zone, climate, season, temperature range or something else altogether? I'm more than willing to look into it :D

Something like the showcase section would work, just with a slightly different format. I'd probably just have a separate tab for edible plants and have the ease of growing rating and name on the photo. There's a lot of resources on the internet of how to grow things but a lot of the time that official information tends to be pretty narrow. I wouldn't have general information listed under it, instead just a comment section would be better. Plus not have the post tied to or controlled by any specific account, just more of a community page which members can vote on each of the ratings.

I had a look, and it does at least show a photo and the name. It's relatively easy to browse through so perhaps creating an article that links to existing fruit and veg might be a thing. That way everything is listed in one easy-to-find thread, with the expanded information on the actual showcase itself. What are your thoughts?

Hello everyone 👋 (I'm still 🤧😷...)
Just had a quick look into this.
I just thought a community forum listing food plants in a nice easy to see in a glance visual format with ratings would give help in finding new things and deciding what to try growing. Not information heavy, just a simple initially visual guide and then clicking on to see from people who tried to grow it in the comments.
And threw something together realy quickly

not sure if that's what you had in mind🤔 a poll/rating could be added to show if others agree to the difficulty level (don't know how that would work with the website layout) plus the normal comment section

Just had a look into the showcase section...
Maybe wen need a seperate section there, where people can upload something similar to the pic I've posted. And Just a pic like this, to get at least the rudimentary info/specifications as well as the optic on whitch then can be voted on? 🤔 maybe call that section: fruit'n'vegg-lexicon

Edtit: Building a new article to bundle up the links of the coresponding showcase item 🤔 like: one or two autors update the article with the links to a new Item in the lexicon showcase section. maybe sort those items in the article by alphabet as it goes.

Edit2: 🤣🙈 sorry I'm getting carried away...
OR... maybe just create a totally new section that combines all the elements of Articles and Showcases, like that ->

I feel like people having to create the image makes it less appealing for them to make entries as it can appear quite difficult to our less tech savvy members under us. The showcase area is (relatively) straightforward as it gives you a layout to work with.
I could perhaps see us changing/expanding the showcase options, depending on the possibilities. I would have to touch base with the options, of course. But having some ideas that they can work with would be nice.

Personally I would possibly change the layout of the showcase items. It can be somewhat confusing to navigate what you actually suits your climate, or perhaps even season. I wonder if there are options to change the way the showcase items are navigated. That way it would be more easy and interesting for people to actually visit said area. Currently the Showcase page doesn't get much use and I would love for it to become a more popular area for people to visit.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

Just something easy if people think it might be a good idea. When someone sees a photo of something they've never seen before it often sparks a bit of interest. And then clicking on the image if they're interested takes them to the comment section it would give them a bit of an insight into other peoples experiences. Many people grow uncommon plants, if they were able to take a photo and put it in as an entry simply with its name it would be relatively easy. Then as others try or have experience with it they can write anything they wish to share about it in the comments.

I have whipped up an idea of what I think a seasonal gardening guide could look like. I would love some tips, pointers, anything.
Yes, this page will be dedicated to Australia as we are our own climate. We have summers during Christmas and it's winter in July. I do hope to later on add different areas, like "Europe" or something liek that. Or do people suggest listing it as Nothern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere?
