Hello, I am trying to grow a raised vegetable garden. Was going well until I have been infested with these creatures. They are all over my zucchini and squash flowers and under leaf. They are spreading to my cucumbers. I have cut off severely infested leaves. Have sprayed with a white oil spray but it doesn’t seem to be working. Please help me save my garden.

At first they reminded me of spider mites, but I don't see any webs.. maybe scale insects or thrips?

I generally use Eco Neem-Oil from Bunnings for just about anything. But this is quite the infestation, plus trying to clean them off before spraying seems like a massive task.

Are they on all your plants, or just a few? And the plants infested, are they from the same family?

@daveb I feel like you helped me figure out what these were on a different post before, but I cannot find it. Do you know anything?

Welcome to the forum Elise.

It looks you have a case of aphids. I would suggest to remove the most infested leaves and put it in a bag and bin it. After that wash your leaves twice daily with covering all sides of the plant, especially the undersides for the next couple of days to get on top of the pest. After that try a spray of white oil and keep monitoring.

Can you give us some more information about your garden and plants you have? This could have possible avoided by different companion planting or having additional predator attracting plants in your garden.

Hi Mandy,
Thank you for your help. I haven’t seen any webs either. I was able to get a better zoomed in picture. They have attacked my zucchini and squash leaves and flowers the worst. Today I found them under some cucumber and pumpkin leaves. Seems like the broader leaf plants are coping it.
My garden isn’t very big so I will definitely get the Neem oil and wipe off what I can. Do you know of any preventative measures I can take or is the Neem oil the best way to stop them returning?
Thank you again for your help

Hello and thank you so much.

I have removed a few bad leaves. I was worried about removing too many. I will definitely do as you suggest, thank you.

It’s my first ever garden bed so I think I got over excited when I planted. It has 2 rows it goes-
1st row Zucchini- squash-red onion- beetroot- cucumbers.
2nd row tomato- carrots-celery-brown onion- pumpkin.
The top row as well as the tomato and pumkin (he just falls over the side onto the ground) are growing alright. The carrots, onion and celery not so much.

Any tips and information to improve my skills and garden is greatly appreciated and will definitely be taken on board.
Thank you again

Oh wow that’s great information, thank you. I have those essential oils so I will make that repellent. I had a look at that website. I will get some pansy’s and marigolds around my garden and some more herbs, hopefully they will help deter the aphids.
Thank you so much for your help
