Hi my name is Naomi and I live in the Whitsundays. It's my first time growing fruit and vegetables. My problem is 3 of my 4 pea plants are already flowering. They are about 40cm tall and one flower looks like it's producing a pea pod (at least I think it's a pea pod). Can this problem be fixed, if so does anyone have any ideas please. One of my pea plants seems to have stopped growing completely (this one is not producing flowers)

Cheers
Naomi

Do you know what kind of pea it is? If it's a dwarf pea this can be very normal and they might start flowering and fruiting. Does the plant still look healthy?

Hi Mandy
I grew the peas from seed, the packet says they're Greenfeast. The packet also says height 70cm. They are not this height, so would being a bit shorter then this matter?
The peas look fine I guess, the bottom leaves look a bit off colour to the rest of the plant but not droopy, the middle to top of the plant looks good and healthy, not droopy etc
The flower that looks like it's growing a pod was a little bigger this morning when I did my usual plant inspection.
Sorry I tried to upload images but I had some issues trying. I'll try again tomorrow

Cheers Naomi

Don't see it as a problem. The height usually means that is the average max height they will get to.
I have them with flowers and pods at about the same height at the moment.
With some that don't flower don't panic, plants are like teenagers some mature quicker or slower than others

Also remember that at times not all seeds grow, have had many over the years that the packet says viable for a couple of years in the future and most seeds never sprouted.
Could be the seeds, thta patch of soils or even ants that have carried away my carrot seeds while I was watching them.
I usually plant double of what I want to grow because I work on a 50% failure rate, most times I get nearly 100% come up but then I can give the seedlings away to family and friends.

I wouldn't bee too worried myself. The packets can only give an "average" description. Soil type, water, temperature, climate... they can all change how the plant grows. And so long as it looks healthy, you're doing everything right.
The bottom leaves discolouring and possibly even dying can be very normal. These are usually the old leaves anyway and tend to die off over time.

If you need any help on how to upload pictures, let me know! I'm happy to help.
One thing to note is that you need to let them finish uploading before you can add them to the post. It's a small mistake I myself have made in the past.

Thank you so much for your help
I greatly appreciate it. I originally planted 5 seeds, one got to about 5cm then died and one is staying at about 5cm tall (not sure what that ones going to do but we'll see) and three are producing flowers so all in all I'll take that as success 😊

Thank you for your help. I greatly appreciate it. Fingers crossed I get some good peas. As well as my other crops I've got going
I started a veggie garden years ago at our old house. I intended to build on at our current house but just never got round to it. We've been at our current house for 13 years now and just starting again, I feel like a novice gardener again. (I mainly did
cherry tomatoes and corn at our old place) All these veggies I'm now trying to grow are totally uncharted territory for me 🤣

Those must be some high definition pictures! I find that sometimes cropping the image even just a smidge can sometimes completely turn it's size down. I'm not necessarily sure why this is, but it works.
How big is the file? We have upgraded the max size of images last year.

Sometimes seeds are duds. Not every seed will germinate to begin with, and some seeds just never grow right. It might have to do with pollination and/or storage, even well before the seeds reached you. I think it's why most packets have a considerable amount of seeds.

It sounds quite exciting though! Nothing like starting fresh and (re)learning skills.
That, and we are most happy to help you along, to the best of our abilities. I've personally been gardening for about 3 years now I think. I've yet to set up my Winter garden - I'm running late. But it's my favourite season of the year here in the sub-tropics.

Peas flowering to early

Glad to hear it worked @Naomi Smith !
We have a size-limit as not to clog up the website. We had it upgraded last year (or maybe the year prior) as we had a multitude of people struggling with the size limit, and we've been doing pretty well since. I will keep an eye on it though; if more people have issues.

The plant looks a bit yellow at the bottom, or does it just look that way in the photograph? It might be a nutrient deficiency. @daveb , could I possibly request your fertiliser knowledge?

i was thinking same thing at a glance as to if they look like photo or did the brightness over correct the image of the cell phone, the foliage should be a nice full gree not yellow, if theey are yellow thee is a nutrient issue or ph or wrong amount of water and this issues would stunt a plant a bit the regulare variety of this pea is up to 70 CM or slightly more and 50 cm for the dwarf all this being said i've grown this variety it is also sold under the name "Lincoln" it is an old heirloom and the side shoots the runners should be about twice as much as you see for its height so i am going to say a nutrient issue not enough nitrogen and not watered correct for the heat and growth
peas are a long day photoperiod so as the days get longer typically flower during late spring or early summer as days are getting longer in northern hemisphere, at summer solstice, if you are in southern its at the winter solstice for longest day if you are about on equator they can play havock when they reach a critical day/night balance difference and if you are in southern hemisphere you are in the wrong growing season sequence

Thank you for your help. I will check ph asap and address the nitrogen in the morning. Cold it be over watering? They get watered every second day

Overwatering can be an additional issue, but with the way the yellow "climbs up" the plant I'd really think it's nutrients.
Watering every other day can be necessary depending on the weather, climate and soil type. Over here I've got a clay-based soil so I have to water a lot less than someone with sandy soil.
