Always wanted to get some Mulch for my garden but never had enough leaves at home and refused to spend $10 on a 5L pack of leaf Mulch (sad that it's so expensive in Singapore and I've not been able to source anyone selling sugarcane mulch either)
So I've started making my own! Had a neighbor throw out a large amount of dried palm tree leaves so I took the whole bale back and am breaking them down by hand and with a trusty pair of scissors :)
Also did the same with some dried sugarcane leaves (those things are prickly!)
Might even consider buying a mini chipper to help with this if I continue down this path

I've seen several different videos of making this a while back. Running em over with the lawn mower to mulch them up, wetting them a bit then throwing them in a black rubbish bag and piercing it with a garden fork, then storing away for a year roughly, sound about right?

Something I haven't tried but dangit ya hooked me in I'll give this a hoon next autumn mate cheers for the reminder! If you have a guide or video on this chuck a link up in here 🧑‍🌾

I won't be doing anything as fancy as that because my beds really need mulch (or I've just really gotten sick of pulling weeds haha) So I plan on adding the leaf pieces directly to my beds
I've also seen the black rubbish bag method though and would go for it if I had the space - definitely give it a go and let us know how it goes!

Smart move using those palm and sugarcane leaves! I’ve done the same with bamboo, time-consuming but worth it. Let us know if you try a chipper, curious how it handles palm. Good luck with the mulch!

Singapore huh... an island, a country, and a city all rolled into one. I imagine there's not a lot of large farms and forests nearby?
City living mulch option number 1 is paper. Shredded paper works well as a mulch, compost worms love the stuff, and a paper shredder is a lot cheaper than a garden shredder. If you asked around enough you may find an office building full of shredded non-confidential paper they'll be willing to give to you or sell cheap. Just steer clear of glossy paper as that is usually coated in plastic.
