How Did WATER Get into Our BOAT'S FUEL SYSTEM?

My dad's boat had a metal screwcap. We had that boat for 20 years (recently sold it), and never had an issue, even though it was sitting flat on top of the walkway. Definitely would recommend screwcaps after years and years of having one ourselves. The only issue we would run in to, is that sometimes it'd rust shut and we would need a wrench to open it. But usually only once at the beginning of our boating season.
