Free range eggs in Australia - is it a con?

Free range egg farmers in Australia are about to benefit from relaxed regulations on how many hens can be kept per hectare of land.

The number of hens will be increased from 1500 per/hectare (10,000 square metres) to 20,000 hens! That's a lot of hens in a little paddock. :-O

I don't think eggs produced at 2 hens per metre should be called free range - maybe something else nut not free range.

Personally, I believe it's just another disgusting example of the greed trend sweeping the world. :|

Read some more about the issue here: http://brisbanelocalfood.ning.com/forum/topics/accc-free-range-egg-standards-under-attack-please-send-in-an-emai and go to Choice magazine and read what they have to say. Animals Australia has not surprisingly, quite a bit to say about it too.

Just visited the thread at BLF which you posted above - good to see the outrage. 20k per hectare and still call it free-range is stupidity. ~X(
