The rhubarb patch here in the city gets the honours of being first this year. In part I needed to pick some to work on pointing the stone foundation...not sure when I'll get to that, but I didn't want to be stepping on those big leaves as I get that work done. I'd wanted to get it done before the snow flew...sigh.

The patch against the house after some picking. We had first planted it in a corner of the yard, but that didn't get enough sun. We moved it and now have rhubarb in two places. Also in the photo are weeds, garlic, chives, garlic chives, sprouting horseradish, and perhaps some raspberries.

Here's what I picked.

First harvest of the season

Just under 10 cups washed and cut. I can see a rhubarb crisp in the very near future.

I forgot to take a photo of the rhubarb crisp I made that we ate with ice cream last night.

Nobody complained...and all are still alive. It was perhaps a bit sweet for my taste so I'll have to strive to remember that. There's more rhubarb prepared in the fridge that we need to do something with soon, but we're also out of vanilla ice cream which goes so well with a crisp.

*Vanilla. I misspelled, my apologies.
Haha we always had vanilla custard powder, and if we felt like it add milk and boil. So delicious. Much better than the custard from a store :D

*don't forget to add sugar to taste

Thanks for the confirmation. There’s so many things in the wide world that I don’t know about I wanted to be sure. Sometimes the “old” ways are best. I’ll have to poke around to see if that is something we can find around here. All I can recall is Jell-o brand instant pudding and now the generic brands.

It's something my mother used to make as a "treat" when in reality money was tight. I actually preferred it and it always made me so happy to eat it. I have been able to find it in "normal" supermarkets in both The Netherlands and Australia without even trying. Just noticed it and I was like "that's mine!".
