QUARANTINE, QUARANTINE, AQUIS, AQUIS!!!!!

Locally within suburbs or maybe within the state might be ok but passing seeds or animal matter intrastate or overseas is just simply not worth the possibility of importing or passing on some terrible plant disease or animal infection such as foot & mouth, bird flu, fungal spore disease or eg panama in bananas(just one small example).

Your garden plants might not show any infection but when transmitted in plant material or soil particles & once established in a new place, the disease could become a real issue in the new area.
Please have respect for farmers whose livelihoods can be completely annihilated or affected by irresponsible transportation of plant & animal material.

That's what we have seed companies like Diggers for. They go to the expense & trouble to grow clean viable seed within the quarantine regulations so we can order from them & get clean seed suitable for our region.
Same applies to animals & animal products such as unhatched eggs which should also comply with import & transportation regs & spend time in quarantine.

Look what happened in Britain when F&M broke out. How many millions of animals were slaughtered & how many farmers suicided when they lost their incomes because some irresponsible person illegally imported some pork product.

Look what's happening right now to our honey industry with bee hives being overrun by mites (not varroa although thats a story in itself) that got in here who knows how but someone let them in, that's for sure & certain, even if it was a feral hive on a shipping container.

Fire blight in apples or unprocessed apple product from NZ or other parts of the world. Our struggling farmers don't need that.

Australia & it's individual states are the 'cleanest' places in the world due to extremely rigorous quarantine regs. Lets please keep it that way. This is a very serious issue.
I'll get off my soapbox now :p

If only Johnny Depp had this conversation with you.

Yes I totally agree. I use Eden seeds when I am ordering seeds as they have established practices and understand quarantine process.

This doesn’t just apply to plants and animals, it also applies to foodstuff and wood products.

My recent enquiry regarding the importation of fertilised eggs from New Zealand highlighted the enormous cost involved for those companies who have already established ethical practices.

We also do not want to be putting people out of business. I doubt whether it will become that huge though. I see it more like an opportunity for locals to do bater trading in their local SSCs.

I still think this would be great but as a local area swap i.e click on your state or area and post what you have/looking for. Obviously there would still be some concerns like Grape phylloxera pest exclusion zones near me but the onus would be on those sharing? maybe a top level thread for each area with references/or local information regarding rules for that area.

I know that quarantine in Tassie is very strict there is a lady here that use to growing garlic was president of the garlic association, got caught importing garlic as office supplies 9 month in prison lost her business and her reputation. You can post any organic material into Tasmania unless it has been certified by Quarantine.
