Bidwell Casaba Melon

This melon had a fantastic flavor profile that earned a forever spot in our food forest. We grow in a deep mulched Back to Eden style food forest which allowed this to be a "set it and forget it" seed. While we did get a substantial amount of rain this year, we did not have to provide extra waterings or food for this plant and still yielded a 9lb 12.6oz fruit. We suspect we could have allowed it to mature even more. According to reviews online, this is a small yield with the average being around 16lbs. We did not experience mildew and it tolerated the heat in full sun beautifully in our space.

The vine itself was surprisingly compact compared to our cantelopes and watermelons. After we harvested the one big fruit it produced we had easily 4 more start to develope on the vine(sadly there was not enough time in our season to let them develope. It's a slow growing heirloom that takes aprox 100 days to maturity.

The actual flesh yielded was quite abundant and seeds formed in tight uniform pockets. We collected well over 200 seeds from this single melon.

It’s so nice to see melon varieties beyond the standard supermarket rockmelon, honeydew and watermelon. Looks interesting!
