Just looking for some suggestions on the best plants to grow in Ohio. My grandma is an avid gardener and has always grown standard flat green beans, tomatoes, pumpkins, and various other veggies.

Just curious what other, or more specific varieties, other people with similar climates have had good success with!

Onions? Lettuces? Leeks?

Low maintenance and easy would get you bonus points because I'm somewhat of a newbie.

All is appreciated!

Thanks!

I have no idea but am sure when the frost passes you can grow anything in your area. Grow what you like to eat. Right now, we are coming into Autumn for us Aussies, its growing garlic, onion, peas, brassicas and other greens.

Good Morning ! I'm from NE Ohio...I like growing garlic, sugar pie pumpkins, Hill Billy Tomatoes (yellow with red streaks, so good and makes the best tomato sammies), San Marzano tomatoes so I can can tomato sauce, no staking needed) Jade Bush Green Beans, yellow wax beans, the ones your grandmother planted, flat green beans, probably are Italian green beans.

My dad grows garlic on his farm and it turns out beautiful every year. I'm looking forward to the harvest. I've never heard of hill billy tomatoes, but ill give them a try.

Like will said, garlic. I have a patch on my land, in MA, where I throw all my garlic, leeks, shallots, and onions that have sprouted. In the fall I’ll cover them will leaves and they over winter pretty well. If the patch gets too thick I’ll harvest some before they go to seed. I also have asparagus, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries, that come back strong after the coldest winters. I’ve also heard of people having success with”hot box” gardening in our zone. I plan on building a few this summer and testing them out with some greens this upcoming winter. Good luck!

I bought some seeds today for the Hill Billys from . I saw this website being promoted by another forum user and I went to check them out and they seem honest. I'll be sure to give them a proper review once i get some sowed.
Yes, Rare Seeds is Baker Seeds. They are really good...Also try .MIGardener. All/ most seed packets are .99 and organic. Luke has a YouTube channel that is really good, too... Do check him out.

Yes I buy seeds from them (Rare Seeds) every year. One year I bought some radish seeds and the radishes that came up were not quite the ones that the seeds should have been. Not a big deal really but they sent me an email saying many purchasers send them an email about it so they were refunding the cost of the seeds to everyone who bought them. I guest either they got mixed up with another type or something. I thought that showed a lot of care to their customers especially since I hadn't even emailed them about it. They have lots of great growing articles on their website as well.

Baker Creek is pretty awesome. It's a favourite for many of my garden friends over there.

One year, I bought the orangeglo watermelon from them. OMG, they were really sweet and yum.
