Howdy all, So I bought some banana pups online from a nursery and they arrived with a few small black dots on the plants, which I ignored for a few weeks, now the plant are fully covered in the black dots. Is anyone able to help me find out what the problem is here and how do I treat it if possible?

I'm really no expert on diseases, as I myself struggle to diagnose my own plants. @daveb do you have anything on this in that marvellous mind of yours?

At first I thought black sigitoka, but at the same time, the patterns don't quite look like what I've read about in the past 🤔
Doesn't look like diamond leaf spot either as the marks look more circular
Maybe banana freckle... hmmm, or mayble just the light/moisture... I am truly unsure.

Are you able to contact the nursery to see if they had a disease on other banana trees? Especially since it already had some dots upon arrival.

"UPDATE" So I asked a few neighbors about it, and now Bio security has collected the plants plus the soil and sent it off for testing. They said they would contact me in a month with the results. They assumed it was banana freckle and they are also testing for black sigatoka. I informed the nursery about it which they kindly asked me to destroy the plants, sorta unable to do that now lol... will post again in a month when I get an update from bio security.

Just heard back from bio security and they informed me it is banana freckles and they would need to visit the nursery to continue the investigation. So I guess that's where the information I will be receiving ends. They informed me that there was an outbreak in NT and they were in the process of eliminating it up there, They mentioned that its interesting that it made it way to NSW. Just goes to show how disease can travel interstate without influence. Good luck to you all!

shows how susceptible some crops are getting to deseases, banans is one that because most of the worlds crops are all clones or dierect llines to one variety one major desease is going to wipe out almost all of the current plantations. there are a few other facing same issues and the 5 highest grown high calorie crops - rice, wheat, maize (corn), soya beans and potatoes are also all facing issues with fast spreading fungal deseases
