I'm not surprised Pitaya (Dragon Fruit) are becoming a commercial crop here in Australia because we do have the perfect climate for cactus! This farmer grows organic dragon fruit and there's no reason why not because nothing attacks this plant except for some dry rot sometimes but it's very hardy.
And, as Peter said in the story dragon fruit is truly something scary in the garden for Halloween.
