Welcome back to another Self Suffishing Me video. In this video Mark warns us about his struggles with SIMRAD.
The first parts mentioned is that a normal screwdriver won't fit the screws and that SIMRAD units are in fact NOT completely waterproof, unlike advertised.
SIMRAD units have an IPX7 rating, which means they should be able to be fully submerged in water up to 1m for 30 minutes without any damage. The sea spray they endured in Mark's boating outtings, should not have damaged that. Mark thinks that the main component that got damaged is the card reader, and perhaps that is considered a seperate thing to the unit itself.
He learnt that when you try to ring warranty or support, that SIMRAD does not go under that name in Australia, but is instead called Navico. And when he finally got a hold of them and asked if the card reader could be replaced, they told him no; you have to replace the whole unit. Mark imagines, that is a massive design flaw.
Mark mentions he feels cheated, as SIMRAD (aka Navico) said his unit was out of warranty by a few months. And that they were only willing to maybe install a refurbished unit for a discounted price.
Mark cannot commend NorthSide Marine more, as they have always been very generous in their advice and giving the best prices.
Mark asks you to please follow this advice; The cardreader has a magnet that keeps the door shut. It does not stop water from getting in to the unit, as it is not completely waterproof. So if you do get a unit with a cardreader at the front, check it regularly. The whole unit got 'fried' in the end by this issue.
Mark doesn't say not to buy the unit, as he does like it when it works. And he feels like the new unit works even faster.
