Hey everyone :)

To somehow try and justify my criminal notable absence from not doing much interacting on our forum here I'm happy to announce my YouTube channel has just ticked over 60,000 subscribers!

And whilst I'm totally wrapped with the support of my Self Sufficient Me channel and Website, the extra interest has generated a whole lot of questions and other things I need to work on. For example, over the past 28 days I have received over 1000 comments/questions just on my YouTube channel alone not including emails, Facebook, and other social media.

Anyway, it's all good and exciting - I'm certainly not whining about it - but just wanted to say although I haven't been creating much here on SSC lately I'm still very keen to keep developing this site into the best Self-Sufficiency forum on the Net.

Here's my latest video

Congrats Mark. Its a big job putting vids on ut twice a week.
That snake was a tree snake with a broken back.
Looks like the dog already got to it.
All those bumps halfway along the snake were bite marks.
It could only work the front half of its body so it was doomed to be eagle food!
Maybe the chooks got to it?

A friend recently told me about her family's 3 big red chooks bailing up a young wedgie in the corner of the pen. The bird got through the roof netting somehow but it will never do that again! :D Chooks 1; wedge tail zero!

wooooo 115,000 subscribers now Mark, it's snowballing :D:cheers:
Um, make it 155K Stevo ;)

Yes, I'm very happy with how my content creation career is going - I couldn't imagine 155,000 people would contemplate subscribing to my YouYube channel but they have and I'm sincerely thankful.

I just purchased a new video camera a PXW - Z90 so I'm hoping I can continue to improve my productions and content overall. I'm already keen to get into next year with lots of projects to do and finish so I can wrap up and release the vids!

Congrats Mark! Saw you mention live streaming in the latest video but that seems to be fraught with issues. Most live streams I've seen consist of spending 10 minutes waiting for everyone to start watching, then bumbling around trying to prop up the camera somewhere so it won't fall over, then the sound and video keep cutting out like a bad phone call...so much so that now I don't even bother watching anything that's been live streamed. With all the effort you'd have to put in to get wifi range extenders set up, I think it's totally not worth it.

Also with your note about losing patrons because of Patreon's interface, I can totally understand. I am also a Patron, but I have found the service distinctly lacking, and despite contacting support on a few occasions they are "too busy" to fix any of the shortcomings. I notice that YouTube are now allowing viewers to financially support channels through YouTube itself. I don't suppose you'd be willing to give that a try on your channel? I'd gladly switch from Patreon to YouTube. I don't get to see most of your Patreon posts at the moment because the site is such a pain to use, but I'm thinking that if I could contribute via YouTube then it might be more practical for you to do things like release your video a day early for paid subscribers, so we can all leave sensible comments before the riff raff come along :)

Yes mate, I agree with everything you've said in your post, in fact, you've hit the nail on the head about Patreon also.

Just writing/thinking on the fly here... But, the YouTube member option seems like a better alternative in the future with the prospect of also becoming a member of the Jordan Peterson/Dave Rubin Patreon competitor once they get it up and running.

The other thing I was thinking of was developing an exclusive membership here such as utilising the current Gold Membership as it is where members who are active enough are automatically upgraded to Gold; but then, also allowing members to pay/donate for the upgrade for immediate access on a monthly basis regardless of how active they are...

This model could work and the "exclusive area" could be a perk that I personally would have more time to interact in without having to administer my Patreon page. Not sure if I could convince many to join - it might work, I don't know.

Anyway, I'm just spitballing at the moment but something does have to change.

Definitely agree that as a content creator you want to be on as many platforms as possible, so that subscribers don't get put off because they are forced to use a platform that isn't working for them. Shame there's no way to post once and have it show up in the member sections of all the platforms!

With these forums, the quality of posts is quite high, so it may be detrimental to limit people if they aren't paid members. I would have no qualms if we were talking about restricting YouTube comments to paid members as that would improve the quality immeasurably, but here on the forum there is a risk of alienating those helpful posters who are not in a position to contribute financially. The way you describe it about giving frequent posters the same perks as subscribers would probably be a good solution though. It's a delicate line to walk, but I completely understand the idea behind giving priority to those who are helping pay the bills.

I have yet to financially support a channel through YouTube, and it's a bit difficult to find out exactly what perks you can offer subscribers, but if there's some way of prioritising the comments of those who are subscribed so they get answered first, maybe that would be enough to get started with?
