    Chicken Breeds

Oh My! So we picked up 5 Hy-Line brown hens on the weekend and we are so impressed. They are 18 months old so definitely laying age. We have had 5 eggs already, they are crazy friendly and so relaxed even with our German Shepherd. I've spent the morning sitting out on the camping chair...

Bit dis heartened by weather atm

We are taking this year as a learning year. Next year we will be implementing shade cloths. We were fortunate that despite getting nearly 200mm in 2 days that our current crop seems to be coping well with it. We nearly lost an entire squash plant from the wind though.

    Chicken Breeds

Sounds perfect to me. There is a local breeder who has them for $5 at the moment which seems great to me :) Isa Brown was my partners preferred choice.

    Growing Health Benefiting Herbs

I have dedicated a section of our garden to health benefiting herbs. I was surprised that Jasmine (Jasminum) is edible and good for you. Pretty incredible.

    Chicken Breeds

Hi Taryn, We are going to be looking at some Hy-Line Brown chickens this weekend. Apparently they are good producers, live longer and are friendly. I had never heard of them before but we are going to check them out. I'm not sure on egg size though.

    Temperate / Subtropical

Thanks Jacqui, I will check it out. Its really hard to juggle because some years we may get frost and other years we get nothing. A lot of apps put us as an average of -2 in July and as well we have half the yard is up high and doesn't get frost and the other half is down low and may get frost...

    Chicken Breeds

Thank you for your reply. The 300+ egg layers sound fantastic! IMG_3218 by Isobel Lewis posted Feb 9, 2020 at 3:03 PM This is our pen/coop. It will have a roof over the entire thing and some nesting boxes inside the coop. This will be for our quail eventually but for now the chickens until...

    Chicken Breeds

We have just built a 4x4m pen for chickens and a coop. This will be our temporary pen (future quail pen) but we would like to get eggs going as soon as possible. The future pen will be larger. What chickens would you recommend and how many? Thank you!

Follow up to 'Gardening on Really Poor Soil'

This is great. I'm going to give weed tea a go since I have an entire acre of Purslane which would make fantastic fertiliser :P

    Temperate / Subtropical

We are right on the border of being subtropical and temperate. It can get really confusing as to what to plant and when. We don't get real frost either so hard to go off seed packets. We are trying to plan out our garden for the first time. Anyone else live within two climates and have any tricks?

    Hello from Toowoomba, QLD

We have recently moved to a one acre property north west of Toowoomba. We are aiming to be self sufficient by Spring 2021. We've been here three months and so far have created a temporary garden bed (Which now has a LOT of squash growing) and a large raised bed we have set up ready to go once...
