Hi all ,

I have just bought a very run down 10 acre horse property at Sunshine Acres near Hervey Bay that I'm slowly turning into one where I can be as self sufficient as possible. Well I bought it 6 months ago anyway .

I'm a FIFO worker and do 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off which presents another set of challenges on top of the normal ones of looking after animals and vege gardens while I'm away. I have some ideas on feeders and watering devices. (So any hints and tips would be appreciated.)

I'm currently growing veges in Wicking beds and barrels . I have 18 Jaboticaba trees and some other fruit trees to plant out when I sort out some irrigation. My future plans include of a large Chicken coop, sheep (arriving late Oct (thanks Jo)) ,goats and aquaponics systems.

I'm a bit of a foodie and an ex Baker/Pastry Cook of 20 years so love all those recipes. So far I absolutely love living on my little farm , I have been inspired by many TV show inc River cottage Aust and UK ,Gourmet Farmer , many youtube channels and cooking shows . And now I'm doing it for real !!!! Happy FIFO Farmer here .

I'll post some pics when I can. Thank You having me and reading my ramblings.
Thanks
FIFO Farmer............. AKA Darren

Welcome to the site Darren, the new property sounds exciting, and plenty of projects ahead to keep you busy.

I googled Sunshine Acres... looks like you're far enough away from people to have some privacy... looks good

Looking forward to see what you get up to on your plot. You might be able to get the housesitter to feed the animals while your gone. I can tell you now, i might put my hand up, thats my kind of holiday!

If youve got any tips on baking for the paleo kind, please do let me know:)

I look forward to seeing everything. Dont forget pictures :)

Welcome Darren...I'm really jealous! I have this idea of buying a bush block but having a little 10-15 acre cleared area for self sufficiency with an off grid home...just not sure we'll ever get there!
Pics please when you're able to!

Welcome Darren your property sounds great and you have some exciting plans and times coming ahead. I look forward to reading about your progress.

You must really like Jaboticaba trees. They are on my list of things of interest, never had the fruit though and the fact they take so long to fruit is a little off putting.

Hi Sasha ,

Yes I have my parents staying atm until early November after our annual Fraser Island trip , so I'm really enjoying my daily phone calls informing me of whats going on . But I think their enjoying themselves too much lol.

As for tips on paleo baking , all I can suggest is to give it a go , if doesn't work the first time have another go but with most cooking / baking its best done with a drink and good company.

Let me know when you need a holiday lol

Thanks
Darren

Thank you yes I really like the usage and the novelty of Jaboticaba and they look a bit pretty too .. my next door neighbor keeps bees so I'm also excited about the honey they may produce too. I figure that Im going to be on my little kingdom for a while so the time fram didn't concern me that much .. I may even be able to recover some of the cost at a local market one day selling Jaboticaba cordial, wines , jellys, jams etc

Thanks for the welcome .Im sure I will learn more on here than I could ever help others.

Hi LetsgoKate,

There are too many of jaboticabas to count, and more making their way across the globe. Many will flower and fruit after 3-8 years, so I am collecting those that can flower earlier, if babied ... according to all reports, the flavor makes it worth the wait!
Happy Gardening!
