Just thought I'd make a thread for solar cookers. I might add some more as I come across them.

A new one on the market, This one is using an evacuated glass tube, the same as hot water systems. I have some hot water evacuated tubes and I know they work very well so this looks like a good idea.

Personally I wouldn't buy one of these because I don't need one, but I reckon it'd probably work pretty well for an off-grid situation. $450 US for the big one.

Looks like they sold out since I looked yesterday. http://www.gosunstove.com/ . Not sure on the chook, probably only fits a small chook too. Temps below says 149c - 204c, I think that refers to the thermal battery only?. I'd like to see some real reviews, maybe in the next few weeks we'll see some.

I'm not sure how it works now, the evacuated glass tube would provide plenty of heat, but maybe it just transfers the heat to this thermal battery thing?

clever invention - might be a little small for a big family, but good for a number of outdoor applications.
For home, I would be more inclined to just go with an electric oven/cooktop with high capacity solar charged battery - of course this option is just a tad more expensive...

A thermal battery? Never heard of such a thing!

I could see it being used by the energy wise grey nomads who have plenty of time to play with gadgets when they're on the way from Brisbane to the Cape then across to Darwin.

I guess it's a fancy term for "Block of Steel". o_O

Your grey nomad comment triggers images of the cooker mounted on top of the caravan and cooking while they drive.... and that reminds me of a fella that used to go 4wding with us, he once wrapped some sausages in alfoil and stuck them beside the engine/exhaust manifold and cooked them.

Yeah my ol' man used to cook bits n pieces on the manifold as he drove long treks.
He made up a little cage that sat on the exhaust manifold and like Stevo said just wrap in foil and away you go. He got it down to a fine art of how far he needed to travel for what meal.

You could make one with a curved bit of shiny stainless steel, or curve some plywood and cover it with reflective material/paint. Smooth and shiny. And use a black cast iron bbq plate to absorb the reflected heat.
