Hi I am Jess I am 24yrs old I am living in a small town in the South Burnett region about 2 hours north of Toowoomba. I have lived here for 4 years now. I live here with my partner and our beautiful 2 year old son :) Mark asked if I wanted to join because I wanted to share photos of my dragon fruit lol... We are on 3/4 acre in town but can hear cows mooing often lol. I have always had a love for trees, fruit & gardening and I love things made out of timber. I think it might run through my blood certainly doesn't come natural with my partner lol. I grew up with lots of fond memories surrounding plants like my gran and pop growing dragonfruit, guavas, paw paw and bananas and as a kid running through my gran and pops front yard which was a rainforest that my pop created... 30 something years earlier it was beautiful :) ..it still is but since gran passed away I think pop has made it more manageable for himself. My pop also made amazing things out of wood really beautiful peices like rocking horses for us kids one was called blacky because it was a black horse lol im sure one of us kids named it we would be in trouble these days for that. He even had a show room at his home for his furniture and his plants he stopped his woodwork in recent years he more does home brew now lol. But he still does his plants he loves it and every year he gives a special needs school a whole lot of plants for the kids to grow :) And then there is my mum.. mum was a single mum for most of our lives she was a working mum too but every weekend was beautiful she would bake and be outside with us in the garden, or getting my brother to drive the paddock basher van and we all got in the back with shovels to fill it up with cow poo for the gardens ... mum was going to make a new concoction she watched on better homes & gardens the night before lol. Anyway lol so thats why I love gardening ... in the future my dream would be to move back to the gold coast hinterland surrounded by tons of fruit trees ferns, palms and listening to rainforest birds. Just have to win the lotto...but I never enter so I'm screwed lol. Thanks for reading sorry for it being so long! lol.

Welcome Jess, excellent introduction! Great that you enjoy the gardening type lifestyle.

I spend a bit of time in that area, I have a friend with a property near Ban Ban Springs, my cousin has a property at Nanango, We go to BP Dam a few times a year, and I use to do car rallies near Murgon. Great country, a bit dry at the moment though.

I agree with Stevo what a top introduction!

My love for gardening in most part came from my Grandfather and mother also. Granddad was an amazing wood worker! However, I struggle with building stuff LOL (unlike Stevo above) :D

How many fruit trees do you have and do are you planning more? Your gallery collection is great http://www.selfsufficientculture.com/gallery/albums/my-fruit-trees.31/

Thanks Mark!
Grandfathers are so precious ...It's so nice to have such fond memories hey :) I would always sit up on my pops work table and help him hit nails and he would even trust me to lacquer makes you feel so special when you are young..and still now lol. My mum for sure took her fathers traits mum was always building something especially just after watching better homes lol. Mostly everyone in my family has a green thumb and they are pretty handy It's so funny my partner he is the complete opposite He didn't really care about plants or anything and he doesn't like fruit (my most favorite thing ever) but he is slowly trying fruit and now likes plants not to the extent I do but he knows they make me happy so he gets excited when I am lol. My son has his own watering can and gardening tools and helps mummy water the gardens he loves outside and doing things in the garden with me..so I am really happy with that :) I think more fruit trees the merrier I think I will always be buying some hehehe...

Great intro Jessica. The older I get, the more sentimental. The more interested in the well-being of this world, and the memories of how good life was before governments interfered in everything to the nth degree. Maybe your partner will appreciate your interests more as he mellows, but he is probably flat-out keeping his head above water as regards to work/finances/etc. at the moment?
A quarter acre is a good block, in this day and age. It's a happy medium between plantings and water usage/cost. My unfiltered water here is 43c/KL, whereas Mums in town is $2.32/KL !!!! South Australia's water is/was the dearest and dirtiest in Australia. The poor old Murray is flogged out and gunked up by the time it gets here.
Heck, you could feed a family of 3 from a balcony garden, set up right! Worse comes to worse, work up the verge - stuff the shire/guvment!
I have fond memories of both grandparents Mallee farms, and the way it was in the 70s, when they took the milk 15km into the train every morning. When a 16 foot seeder was the biggest available. When a bad year didn't result in a bank foreclosure.
Yes, the good old days. I hope I am long dead before we are all manipulated into the idealistic existence of the government pigs and their mindless ignorance. That which city-centricity propagates. De-centralisation is the answer to governance and many other foul pollutions. Local Industry, not corporate indifference. Local law and decision-making, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Anyway Jessica, we can't change what other people do, only what they think.;)

Jess, congratulations to you. You look stunning and your husband should count his blessings!

Welcome to the forum (I'm a little late with the welcome since I joined SSC after your introduction) and hope you enjoy it here. Great to have so many SE Qld members around the place.

Don't worry, your interest in gardening and the outdoors life will soon rub off on your now husband. Congrats again!
