Well that is a pretty basic snail setup but it looks good and it should work great hey. So it has no floor then? The little buggers can't get under can they? Will it drain easy enough in a heavy downpour or is it under an eve or cover?

I had no idea you could eat any snail in the backyard! Do you have to purge your snails like in the Gordon Ramsay video or are yours a special breed? It looks a fairly easy process to purge them and prepare for eating anyway. I've only had the French style garlic snails myself (in Morocco actually and once in South Africa) but I quite like the idea of frying them with a pancetta base and served on top of dressed salad - YUM!

Some close-up pics of your snails (as they develop) would be nice if possible...
Me too... The first and only place I've had snails was at the East Rand Mall in Jo'Burg, Sth Africa. They were super yummy and very very filling.

Actually I remember that is not totally true. When I was about 3 we lived on 1.5 acres in Toongabbie, Sydney. My mum and aunty caught me in the storm drain eating snails raw. I was tough back then... Nerves of steel I tell you!!! :)

OK so here is my little addition. What would be a dish you would cook using snails and produce you grow yourself? Be creative and feel free to include other food items you create or harvest...

Umm, snails on
Lettuce!
Only joking

Seriously, I do like garlic with snails but garlic is pretty difficult to grow where I am... It would have to be simple I think, and with plenty of herbs: I'm thinking "Italian" snails fried up with plenty of olive oil and generous amounts of fresh oregano, parsley, and basil seasoned with salt & pepper and served sprinkled with parmesan cheese. What'd ya think of that?! :eat:

I saw a show a while ago and the guy was producing snail caviar. Apparently people pay top dollar to eat their eggs. If your after free protein and have a strong stomach @Mark , check this link:

Yeeehaaarrr :yahoo:... Perfect business for outback supplemental cashflow ... > Redneck Maggot Wranglers <. :eat:

I would think if your pole was tall enough and the bucket sealed tight with holes only for flies to enter and not other night time critters, this would be a great way to supplement poultry feed. Stick some old steak bones or a bit of dead rat/possum/roo/snake road kill in there an you've got a free source of feed. We certainly don't lack the flies in Australia. Might as well get some use out of them. Fly blown food doesn't smell as bad as Leprosy. Or so I've been told!

Do you know the French eat maggots? They're called Genteels or Genteils not sure how it's they spell it but it sounds like Gen Teels...

Snail Caviar... Why not? The French eat it too... :vomit:

Sounds great. What about... Shiskebabs with Fresh Snails + Prime Rib Eye Chunks each separated by Sweet Yellow Capsicum and Large Button Mushrooms glazed with your Piri Piri Sauce or some Spicy Chilli Glaze served on a bed of Basmati or Pilau Fragrant rice? BBQ on The Webber? Side servings of fresh Snail Caviar and Rocket and fresh sourdough bread. For drinkies we could have some Meyer Lemon Juice in Bubble water. Pudding... You choose?

When can we come around? LoL...

To show you how snail farming is done in Australia... Check this out.
