Im in the hunter valley in a rental with almost useless garden beds really only good for the weeds that fill them . I will eventually get around to digging them out and putting in some nice edibal flowers that don't mind a decent amount of shade . My question is being in a rental I need to have pretty much everything in containers I want to start a cut and come again container for baby greens . i love baby radicio ( don't know how you spell it ) so i purchased a packet of them and a couple of other lettuce varieties mainly because I refuse to pay the inflated prices at Coles and woolies and even aldi for a small bag of baby leaves that look like they have been in the bag for weeks . I have a packet of radish aswell to go in . what other greens can i use that you can cut when young and enjoy . i have some sweet potato down the back starting to get new leaves but i want them to grow a bit before i start picking their leaves. any suggestions for container growing . i will get a few decent frost mornings where i am but will have the plant's in a spot where they will warm with the morning sun .

Hi Melanie,

I'm also in a rental and I've managed to grow a lot of stuff over the years in spite of having to move, having limited space and having really poor soil quality.

I highly recommend some form of 'no dig'. I can't dig so I place a layer of something weed retardant (cardboard, newspaper etc) and then add layers of whatever I've got and plant on top of it. I've just harvested two kgs of accidental potatoes from one no dig bed. These came from a bag of sprouting spuds a neighbour gave me plus a few that formed from throwing my veggie scraps in the bed.

Grow silverbeet. This requires no effort and mine have survived frosty winters in the Northern Tablelands without being looked after. The young leaves can be used in a salad.

My top tip for container gardening in a rental is find some composting worms. You can container compost and the residue will also improve your soil quality.

Good luck!
