    Chooks by the Sea

We end up with more eggs than we know what to do with, so I use them to "bribe" the chap up the road whose got a bobcat to do a bit of grading and whatnot. Nothing like fresh-laid eggs! and he's keen to help, keeps offering :)

    Chooks by the Sea

Pretty much the same here: they're not laying, and that's okay. It hasn't been a very cold winter here in SE QLD, but it's not a really big deal to me whether they lay or not... this is going to sound a bit weird, but what I'm really after is something they provide incessantly: poo. :ROFL...

    Chooks by the Sea

As it's wintertime (yeah right, Winter in SE QLD is a bit of a self-cancelling phrase) they aren't laying much, but they're happier than ever. I've had to sort-of fence them in a bit, as they were pooing everywhere and our yard was looking a bit like Dunkirk after a shelling but they still have...

What has changed in your life in the last few weeks?

I'm a nurse - so, an "essential worker" - so our hours have actually been increased, although I'd gone to part-time to phase in retirement and so bringing my hours back to almost fulltime doesn't excite me much. However, I'm grateful to be living in Australia - I'm a Yank - where I feel...

    Chooks by the Sea

Thought I'd do a real quick update on our activities. Well, we just HAD to have chooks, didn't we? ;) Actually, to be honest I'm at least as excited as Julia about the hens, although I tend to move a bit more deliberately into major projects like this. for example, I wanted them as safe as...

    Hello from South West Victoria

Very good points, Cliss... thank you for the insight. By "foundation", I failed to say that I'm only considering it for the perimeter of the run and the pen, in order to dynabolt the house and run to something secure - we have foxes and an Eastern Brown and goanas and other curious critters who...

I've been sucked in - and i'm lovin' it!

Welcome, Flamin'! Our neighbour was building his pool, and was kind enough to chuck all his dirt into my backyard, where I'll - bit by bit -filter out the rocks and roots and then slowly soil-build with compost. I find those building pools are usually quite keen to avoid having to take it all...

Sub Tropical, SEQ planting this summer

Looks like we're finally looking at a bit more rain for the moment. I noticed during the last downpour, one corner (the lowest) of our back yard saw a fair bit of standing water for a while. Water being so precious, I was mulling over in my head how best to take advantage of it, and was...

    G'day from Redland Bay (QLD)

Thank you, Mark. :) We're actually planning 3x sleepers-high beds for the neighbourhood kids! We're in process of purchasing a 5000 litre water tank - no water, no plants - which will allow us to do this. And all those kitchen scraps (and shredded paper, and cardboard) turned into compost and...

Sub Tropical, SEQ planting this summer

I so would love to source these spinaches in green... do you grow them from seed, Mark? I haven't seen them anywhere - perhaps I was having a "boy look"... :(

    G'day from Redland Bay (QLD)

Thank you, DTK and Greg. I must give all credit to Mark on whatever little success I've had: his sound biology principles and easy (TOO easy!! ) to follow suggestions in a setting of similar challenges to overcome is going to lead to good outcomes, surely. Just listened to his...

    Hello from South West Victoria

Welcome, reeeen4! Wow, your experience with incubators has firmed our resolve to get some "rescue chooks" for now. The chook house is in process of being built (kit) but first, going to put down a solid foundation... thinking either railroad ties or concrete beams, and then dyna-bolting the...

    Hi from Hervey Bay

Totally agreeing with Dan - just having a read and learning HEAPS! Welcome, Col!

    G'day from Redland Bay (QLD)

Yeah, we have basically clay, Mark... I planted this sad little avo down the back - took a mattock to dig a hole, and despite filling it will good soil, the poor thing fails to thrive. And then, I saw your video on the problem with fruit trees and poor draining soil, and, well, had my answer...

    G'day from Redland Bay (QLD)

Wow, g'day, Mark, and thank you for having me... and hello, Cliss and Patty :) thank you for the cordial welcome! First, a huge disclaimer that I failed to make when I first introduced myself... my wife and I were amazing adept at killing plants (mostly through neglect but also ignorance). We...
