I've researched Tapatalk just briefly and already I'm reading compatibility and general bug problems with this forum software.

Plus Tapatalk requires access to our database and users, which worries me security wise.

Let me know some features you like and I'll try to implement them organically.

Xenforo is a major forum software so there would be thousands of websites using it. Tapatalk allows people like me who are members of dozens of forums the ability to browse and engage in conversation in one place in a consistent mobile or tablet optimised experience that is fast and optimised for the platform.

I find many forums inside tapatalk which is why I suggested it would bring you new visitors. It allows users to subscribe to individuals forums so they get updated by a mobile notifications rather than typical forum notifications based around mentions or replies. This drives more conversation.

Regarding bugs... show me any software without bugs??

As to security.... let me preface my comments with it is always your choice what you install on your website of course and I respect that.... but if this was a real or significant concern it would not be installed on just about every other Web forum out there. It is installed on well, over 100,000 forums across a range of different forum software including tech enthusiast forums.

In fact this is the only forum I engage in that does not have tapatalk. It works for iPhone, I pad, android phones and tablets.

I think if it had any real security concerns some of the nerds out there would have found it and software like WordPress has bugs and security concerns galore yet it is the most popular platform for websites available. It's popularity brings the attention of the nefarious but despite that I run dozens of websites on WordPress and would not consider anything else at the moment.

You can't provide Tapatalk features organically. It does not work that way

I understand what you like about it but there are forums (some very big ones like AVForums) now actively trying to unravel themselves from Tapatalk. That's not a good sign.

I'll look into it more but I'm not sold on the idea.

Are you referring to 2014 when avforums chopped and changed their mobile solution from

Mobile veraion
To forumrunner
To tapatalk
To responsive website
To tapatalk

They upset their users because of their constant changes... I think the biggest issues came from some custom coding they had which clashed with tapatalk at the time...... and they got the most complaints from their community when they disabled tapatalk so they quickly turned Tapatalk back on..

Avforums today has 130,000+ users using Tapatalk.

I can't find any evidence that in 2017 that avforums are trying to unravel themselves from Tapatalk.... can you share some more info?

Again.. the decision is yours but if you look for users complaining with any software that has this sheer size of install base and user base you are going to find them. Why not look at the thousands of forums using tapatalk today including avforums or three of the largest xenforo forums... bigsoccer, bigfooty and theforce.net. Bigsoccer and Bigfooty don't even popup tapatalk when you visit them from a mobile or tablet and they still have nearly 90,000 and 50,000 members respectivly using Tapatalk who have actively sought out these forums on the software.

If you do your research looking for problems you will find them. Because people complain and operation errors abound. Tapatalk has evolved so much since it launched and its use in the forum space is massive.

You need to decide if you are going to enable it or not. I would be the first user if you do decide to go ahead with it..

So he has tried to get rid of it before in 2014 but his users complained too much..

And in late 2016 (and probably still to this day) he would still like to get rid of it but hasnt. I like to get rid of my reliance on petrol and get an electric car too... but I am cant. He has 130,000 Tapatalk users which goes a long way to explain why his reasons have not been strong enough for him to pull the plug.

It seems he would like a fully custom solution but I am willing to bet should he ever turn Tapatalk off he would be flooded with complaints. He thinks he can recreate some features of Tapatalk and then he will be able to disable it but that is exactly what he tried in 2014. Tapatalk allows users to follow and integrate multiple forums from one app. Its more about the ease for the visitor... not the ease for the admin.

Its nice that he is generating enough traffic to the site to justify he can even think about custom programming other solutions but most forum owners dont have his resources.

But I dont think his custom solution is going to work either.. So if he had some users which used Tapatalk for just one forum and that was AVforums and he then recreated those features he thinks those users would migrate to using his solution. I would argue that many if not most of his tapatalk users would be using multiple forums through tapatalk so even though he recreated some tapatalk features buy turning it off he has then made it harder and more complicated for his users to stay engaged and interact with the forum.

His reasons maybe genuine.. but they all focussed on his preference. ie... he wants to control how his ads are displayed. Tapatalk allows you to show your ads so you get revenue... He would like to have a more granular control over those ads... He does not want Tapatalk having access to the database and if you had the option and still deliver the same feature set you would always so no... but as any programmer will tell you, the feature list of Tapatalk would have 90% slashed off it if it did not have access to the database. It would then not be as powerful and thus as popular with users.

You have made your decision.. and that's fine. As I have stated, that is totally your options and I appreciate you looking at it as an option. I can't see you doing a custom programming solution so I can only think you dont want it to add to your workload and I certainly understand that.

I was simply hoping that it would not only assist me with the forum but would also inject more activity into the forum. I have found that only those forums I follow on Tapatalk are the ones I have had long term engagement with.

cheers

No worries - I thank you for the suggestion and I stress I haven't completely ruled out integrating this app here on SSC... It's just that I don't want to implement anything that opens up the website to a foreign entity without fully understanding the implications.

I'm all for wanting this forum site to grow in active membership - it would be great if we could grow into a big online community and if this meant more work for me then (in that scenario) I would be really happy!

I will continue to research Tapatalk and keep an opened mind.

Meanwhile, if there are other members that also use Tapatalk and would like it enabled on SSC please add your opinion to this thread.

Not sure if it's Tapatalk I've tried, have to see what pops up next time I'm on a forum on my tablet. But the one that does and I've tried personally I don't like it. But that is just from a user point of view, but it may not be Tapatalk. I'd most likely use the web based forum but I can certainly understand what Comfort is saying. These days so many people do things from mobile devices.

As far as security is concerned I think you are very wise Mark to look and research carefully into anything to do with web security. If you are happy to have it on the site then it's up to the individual if they choose to use it.

Tablets are wide enough with enough reolution to work in desktop mode without issues. Mobile phones are another matter. Mobile web traffic exceeds desktop traffic for a few years. See http://www.smartinsights.com/mobile...keting-analytics/mobile-marketing-statistics/

I suggest that with no responsive design, no mobile app or mobile web version a forum like this has to survive on primarily desktop traffic.
