G’day! ✌ I’d like to introduce myself to you all! My name is Katie and I live in Arid Outback NSW in a town called Cobar! It’s a rural mining town specialising in Gold, Iron Ore, Copper, Silver, Lead, Zinc to name a few A small population of 2500 with very little services or amenities. So as you can imagine we struggle with the harsh environment out here,, dry clay pan DIRT! We’ve been in our veggie patch for about 7 months now and have had all the problems from the insisting drought to water restrictions (dam is now less than 2% ***) poor soil quality, NO GARDEN CENTRE FOR 300km :( :( :( . Scary, uncertain times lie ahead so we’ve tried to get ahead of it by rebuilding our backyards ecosystem and continually trying new methods, most we see from lovely people on Instagram or YouTube (and of course Mark’s vids are a fave in our household!! ) with sharing their own gardens and ideas and inspiring us all a bit more! WHAT A GREAT COMMUNITY ☺️☺️☺️ So to one and all hello and thanks for the welcome Let’s keep this earth beautiful ❤️ TOGETHER!

G'Day Katie and welcome.

I hope you are getting some of this rain at present. The Aust outback needs it badly. Fingers crossed for you.

Would love to see pics of what you have done to cope with the drought and water restrictions in your neck of the woods.

Best wishes and good luck.

Admire your gardening tenacity amongst the Cobar challenges of hot, dry and limited nutrients! Hope you get rain soon! Sydney Hills District has just had 40mm in last 36 hours. Plenty more to come apparently.

Thankfully we’ve had about 30mm over the last few days. ☺️ Tanks are full once again! With expected showers over the next few days too. Hopefully the catchment got a refill also.
It really is touch and go for the next 2 months and uncertain times lie ahead. We’ll be getting water by freight line when it runs out.

Aaah you beauty Mark! Thank you
and seriously MASSIVE thanks for this site. What a great way to communicate with fellow green thumbs! Please keep bringing the belly laughs with your vids too. We call you Uncky Mark to our 9 month old when you’re on because it’s a regular face she sees! Lol

Hi there Katie and family!

Clay soil isn't as bad as some might think. It just requires gypsum and compost dug in usually to bring it to life.
As the saying goes :- make hay while the sun shines! I guess, now you've had some rain, you are out there now planting some veg.

Welcome Katie:) I sure can understand the issue you have with your soil. I went out of my way to amend the ground
here in Arizona. Now, I mostly grow in raised beds and barrels.
