This question may have been asked before but here goes. Can I grow fruit trees in tubs and what things should I consider when doing so? I live in north east Victoria. TIA,
You can and I do. I started in 65L pots from Bunnings, which was the biggest they sold at the time. I believe they now sell bigger ones. I have now moved most of them into 246l root pouches bought from Rob https://www.bitsouttheback.com/root-pouch
They are doing very well in the root pouches, Rob’s site has info on them and you can also google the concept.
I have mine setup with an automatic dripper hose system with a timer. With anything in pots they do require a bit more attention as far as they are relying on you for their water and nutrient needs. I fertiliser mine every 8 weeks. It’s not like in the ground where the roots can go and source out these things. I also prune and keep them at a size that is manageable for me. They fruit and do well.
The reason I did this is we have several big gums and other trees on our property and the roots on these where sucking it out of my fruit trees.
Citrus do well, figs, I have mangoes trees, paw paw, dwarf avocados, apples, guava, mulberry trees, blueberries, pear, stone fruit, persimmon, have even grown banana which fruited and were yum. Any dwarf tree would be ok, other’s you just prune to size, things like peacan and other nut trees unless dwarf are too big. I don’t let too much stop me. Citrus and figs are an easy place to start.
Since my pots are so big I have used good quality premium garden soil, with some perlite mixed in as I go and add fertiliser and zeolite and mix through as I am going. The plants seem to love it and thrive.
