Harvested a couple of grow bags and pots. Check out my Turmeric and ginger pile. Also got a few sweet potato's. Still have two more pots of Turmeric to harvest.

The ginger was added to a nice little leg of wild pork along with mini egg plant from the patch.

Oh wow nice haul. I've got 2 pots of turmeric to harvest but haven't gotten around to it yet. Also read that they will just continue to grow if I leave them in the ground so kinda tempted to do that until we move to the property full time.

Pulled pork with ginger, yum!
Home made bbq sauce, yum!

Yes Mataeka, those root crops will just keep coming back.
The older roots will die off and the newer ones will reshoot.
You won't increase the number substantially unless there is a lot of spare space in the container.

this what I am wondering. Even after I harvest either tumeric or ginger can i just throw a piece back in the pot and keep going. where they are now is in two rubbermaid self watering bins. Getting sun and shade during the day - tumeric more sun than ginger - and they seem to love the location. When I harvest I would like to pop in more compost and reset a few pieces. BTW tumeric grows abundantly here and will bloom but ginger just ...grows...so...slowly.... it also likes to sprout no matter where it put it to dry out, so I just keep planting it in other places around the yard. it always grows!!!
Info for the above member: i leave the ginger until the leaves dry up and die then i harvest. the tumeric leaves dont dry out so it is a case of knowing when there are lots of tubers. Both can be harvested fresh whenever if you have run out of dry which happens to me or you want the fresh stuff this time. i just dig down with a sharp knife and pull out as much as I need. i just noted that where I last did this to ginger root there is a new shoot! live and learn.

Bea, the thing about leaving the roots where they are to continue to reshoot or otherwise replanting into the same pot is that eventually you get root disease.
So to prevent that happening its best gardening practise to change the location every year if possible or as often as you can.
If your pot is in the right place simply change the growing medium in the pot.
You can always use that growing medium in another place in the garden so its not wasted.
Just put fresh medium into the pot.

For easier to manage pots and pails this is exactly what i do when a plant has 'gone over' ;). but these tubs are somewhat difficult. I will figure something out. Has anyone tried switching the tubers. i.e. pull up the ginger and plant the tumeric and vice versa. I did this for the last two batches but thinking I should switch out either the soil or the location this time..
